Lamps aren’t something I usually put much thought into regarding their appearance or design. Once in a while, a chandelier or an eye-catching light fixture might catch my eye, but overall, I don’t really care much for what they look like at home or even in coffee shops, workplaces, or malls I frequent. If a lamp is designed well and does its job effectively, it’ll definitely grab my attention.
Designer: Matthias Pinkert
The Kala Lamp appears to be one of those uniquely crafted pendant lamps. What stands out is that it looks like it’s floating effortlessly with just two thin wires supporting the whole piece. These barely-there wires cleverly hide the lamp’s power supply, which gives it a magical feel. But the real enchantment lies in how you can control both the amount of light and its direction using the four rings.
By slideing the four rings along the base, you can create a custom light space. Instead of lighting the whole lamp, you have the flexibility to choose specific areas and how much light each section gets. It’s a fun way to move the rings around, adding a level of interactivity to find just the right setup for your ambiance. You can also tilt it 45 degrees forwards or backward, allowing for either direct or indirect light.
The designer for sure has considered how sturdy the fixture needs to be. I mean, I can’t help but worry about it falling since those wires are so thin, or that someone might accidentally break it while playing with the rings. Still, it’s a really interesting pendant lamp, masterfully designed and brings not just personalization but functionality to the lighting experience.
