Modders are constantly revamping ideas, injecting creativity into existing concepts and finding new paths that even the original manufacturers might not have considered. A great example of this is the BBook AI Original Edition: a portable laptop-like gaming device that includes the hardware of a PlayStation 5. This modified Sony console now sports a 17.3-inch 4K display and comes in at nearly 5 kg in weight.
Almost double the weight of the original console, just looking at the BBook AI brings me back to the gaming laptop I had back in 2008. Still, it’s a fascinating piece of hardware, allowing you to enjoy games like Astro Bot even when you can’t hook up your PS5 to a larger screen.

The creation of Chinese modders, the battery-less BBook AI Original Edition operates as a fully functional PlayStation 5 that you can take with you on the go or set it up at home with an external screen. It’s powered by an eight-core AMD CPU along with a 36 Compute Unit AMD RDNA 2 GPU, featureing 16GB of GDDR 6 unified memory, 825GB of PCIe 4.0 storage, and a 17.3-inch 3840×2160 IPS display boasting 100% DCI-P3 coverage at a moderate 60Hz refresh rate.
All of this fits snugly within the 3D-printed frame of the BBook AI Original Edition. From what’s visible in the photos, this device will have its own keyboard and a USB Type-A 10 Gbps port for connectivity. As mentioned, this PS5 can also link up to an external display if that’s your preference. But if you do that, it somewhat defeats the purpose of portability; so you might as well get the original PlayStation 5 instead.
That being said, it’s also worth pointing out that the BBook AI Original Edition lacks a built-in battery. So, if you want to game, you’ll need to be near an AC outlet. If you’re fine with having a PS5 in a laptop shape, measuring 13.3mm thick and weighing 5kg with its power supply, you’re looking at a pretty noizy setup – its sound system can hit 71.3 dB – costing around $2,750.
