The split between Xbox and PlayStation is already noticeable, but mix in options like the Nintendo Switch and unique arcade controls, and it creates a real challenge for gamers whose tastes go beyond these modal differences. With no single controller that rules them all, the next best solution would be to allow players to choose their preferred setup, which is finally becoming a reality with the AYANEO 3 handheld gaming PC.

Depending on who you’re talking to, the layout of Xbox or PlayStation controller might feel more ergonomic, but really, it’s just about getting used to what the console makers offer their users. At the same time, some PC games are a complete mess to play with controllers, which is why Valve decided to put in those unusual trackpads on the Steam Deck. And then consider the flipped ABXY buttons on the Nintendo Switch and the typical six-button system of arcade fighting games, and you’ve got a total of four or five different setups out there.
AYANEO has introduced a modular system named Magic Modules, which allows users of its new handheld to change out controls on the fly, based on the games they are playing. You may not have a keyboard handy for typing, but a touchpad and buttons that mimic a mouse should suffice for many PC titles. If you’re in the mood for some button mashing with Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, there’s a Magic Module for that, although you’ll still have to deal with a tight button configuration.
Not only can you swap modules, but you can also flip them upside down so you end up with two analog sticks at the bottom like a PS DUALSHOCK controller and switch back to a regular Xbox layout afterward. It looks like the button caps can also be removed for rearrangement, though that might be a bit more of a hassle than just swapping controller modules.
As amazing as these features sound to gamers, the real test will come when the AYANEO 3 gets into the hands of the public. The risk with a modular system is that it could compromise the stability, reliability, and durability of the device. Nevertheless, AYANEO is promising big, so it’s gonna be interesting to see if they can actually deliver this so-called Holy Grail of gaming.
