In the dark of the night, far from the bright city lights, the moon stands out as the most prominent object in the sky. You might be under the impression it’s emitting its own light, but it’s actually just reflecting the sun’s intense rays, softening them into a more tranquil and soothing glow. Hence, the moon has served as a muse, influencing not just poets and writers but also designers.
While this lamp doesn’t quite resemble the moon—unless you look at it from above—it is also inspired by nature. Instead of using a typical lampshade to reduce light brightness, it employs the concept of indirect lighting, cleverly utilizing its structure to reflect the light multiple times. This method creates a soothing ambience, perfect for a bedroom setting.

There are several approaches to soften bright light, and the majority of lamps go for the standard route of covering the light source with some kind of material to either limit the amount of light that shines through or to direct it somewhere specific. Another method is allowing the light to shine away from the viewer while only permitting reflected light to come through, similar to how the moon reflects the sun’s light.
Appropriately named “Lunar,” this lamp cleverly utilizes the same idea by incorporating two round plates that mimic the sun and moon’s interaction. The upper plate holds the light source and directs it downwards, while the lower plate reflects it back repeatedly until some of that light seeps through a tiny opening between the two plates. This method results in a fascinating interplay of light that engenders a calming ambiance, making it a much better fit for a bedside or side table rather than a work desk.
While the indirect light feature already makes this concept unique, its minimalistic and modern look enhances its visual charm. The design consists simply of a large cylinder supporting the circular plates, without any extra flair or decorations. This lamp subtly draws your eye before it seamlessly integrates into the overall aesthetic of your room.
The materials chosen for the lamp not only enhance its appearance but also affect the quality of light it casts. Stainless steel plates create a more defined reflection, while the wooden materials produce cozier tones. The straightforward shape composition also opens the door for 3D printing options, allowing the use of various materials, including recycled plastic and metals.
